I would like to start today's blog off with a movie review. I had the rare opportunity the other night, to leave my dwelling and enjoy a night out on the town. My friend and I decided to see the movie "The Knowing". Although neither of us really knew what the movie was about, we saw that Nicholas Cage was in it, and figured it couldn't be all bad. We were right. It wasn't all bad. Just mostly bad. The movie starts out like a typical horror film. Creepy little girl hears voices... puts a numeric puzzle in a time capsule to be opened 50 years later... Little boy with floppy hair gets numeric puzzle 50 years in the future and all hell begins to break loose, as Nicholas Cage attempts to prevent catastrophic events from occurring. This is where the movie leaps out of the stupid tree and hits every branch on the way down. Throughout the movie you are given glimpses of strange albino men that stalk Nicholas Cage and his Son. These men are never truly explained, rather left for the viewer to decide what type of being they are. Are they Aliens? Are they Angels? Are they Demons? All of these explanations fit in some way or another. But as I said, the crazy giant cue tip people are never really explained. There is far more stupidity that follows, but in order to not ruin the movie for everyone, if you are interested in spending a few hours out of your life deciding whether we see things the same way, stop reading here... Now that we're alone I'd like to have a hardy laugh at the absurdity that is "The Knowing". Phew, OK... So, First off, Nicholas Cage should never be cast as a father figure again. EVER! The Olson twins would have been a better fit. Although, I can't really blame Nicholas Cage, as it was truly poor writing. Let me give you an example, at the end of the movie, Nicholas Cage is standing in front of 6 Albinos that kidnapped his son and a little girl that is the grand daughter of the crazy little girl who wrote the cryptic letter 50 years ago. So there he stands amidst these 6 men who stalked him and his son for the entirety of the movie. His son, at this point is no longer afraid of these men as they gave him a pet bunny to keep. Nicholas Cage's son is then told by these paper white beings that he (the son) is to go with them to another planet so that they can start over. And what do you think Nicholas Cage does?... That's right, he hands his only son off to a bunch of creepy Alien/Demon/angel like things to go be the next "Adam". This is after Nicholas Cage finds out that the world is doomed and is going to be entirely wiped out by a solar flare. I could potentially tare this movie apart from beginning to end, but I figure I have made my point. Also, I should at least give the movie credit where credit is due. As I stated before, Nicholas Cage attempts to prevent these absolutely catastrophic occurrences from happening. Though he is unsuccessful, the actual tragedies are quite well depicted. There is a lot of carnage and really great special effects. This was by far, the high point of the film. So for those of you who love special effects, bring your headphones and your ipod to the theater and I am certain that you will have a good time. I would rate this movie a 5overall, on a scale from 1-10
